Chateau Rayas Masterclass: Vertical Tasting 1993-2007
An exceptional opportunity to taste 12 vintages of this legendary Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Jacques Reynaud, oft-described as the Godfather of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, was responsible for establishing the reputation of Chateau Rayas as the leading proponent of wines from one of France’s most historic and well-known appellations. His untimely death in 1997 saw the reins passed on to his nephew, Emmanuel Reynaud, who has continued to carry the mantle of his famous forebears, producing some of the world’s most stunningly aromatic wines.
The estate has been in the Reynaud family since the 19th century, when Emmanuel’s grandfather, Albert Reynaud, purchased the property in 1880. It was really the work of Jacques and Emmanuel’s father, Louis, who made the estate famous with their pioneering work. The practices undertaken at Rayas are almost at odds to the rest of Châteauneuf-du-Pape – 100% Grenache, super-low yields around 15 hl/l and a sandy terroir with none of the famous pebbles (galets roulés). Moreover the vineyard is surrounded by towering Pine trees which help circulate the airflow, regulating temperature and humidity. This seemingly magical terroir is responsible for creating its very own microclimate — and exceptionally elegant wines. All of the above make Rayas completely unique in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and without doubt one of the world’s iconic wines.
There are few wines which stand out in their respective appellation for quality and individual character. Clearly in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Chateau Rayas offers exactly that with a range of flavours and aromatics which are unforgettable. The wines of Rayas are a must for any oenophile.
