HDH ‘Celebration of Burgundy’ sale smashes record by $1.5m

Hart Davis Hart’s annual ‘Celebration of Burgundy’ sale made more than $7m – over $1.5m more than last year’s auction.

Every single one of the 2,602 lots was sold during the event, which took place from 13-14 April in Chicago. Over half of the lots sold exceeded their pre-sale high estimates.

Top lots included: a Jeroboam of 1990 Grands-Echézeaux from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti ($26,290); four bottles of 2011 Corton Charlemagne from Coche Dury ($19,120); 12 bottles of Georges Lignier et Fils’s 1985 Clos Saint-Denis ($7,170) and a single bottle of 1993 Musigny from Domaine Leroy ($11,950).

In a statement, HDH said: “The record-shattering prices confirm both the current strength of the fine wine market and HDH’s standing as the top auction house in the United States.

“As in the past, bidders showed incredible enthusiasm for this sale’s wide array of lots from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Featuring an impressive 48 vintages dating back to 1966 and encompassing all the domaine’s Grand Cru vineyard sites, the sale’s DRC offerings achieved a total of $2.2 million, claiming eight of the sale’s top 10 lots by value.

“The remarkable provenance and stellar quality of the wines offered throughout the sale attracted fierce bidding from collectors, breaking several world records.”
