By Chateau Suduiraut

2001 Chateau Suduiraut from Château Suduiraut, Sauternes, Bordeaux

The early millennium blessed us with a vintage of remarkable distinction in the sweet wine enclave of Sauternes. The 2001 Chateau Suduiraut from Château Suduiraut epitomises the year's climatic grace: a hot summer interspersed with just enough showers to spur the Botrytis cinerea, also known as noble rot, and a dry harvest season perfect for concentrating the sugars.

An Unrivalled Alchemy of Elements

In Bordeaux’s 2001 narrative, Sauternes played a pivotal role, delivering one of the region's most venerable sweet wines. It is said that the timing of rainfall before an Indian summer plays its part in perfection; this anecdote rings true for 2001 Chateau Suduiraut. As an avant-garde in its category, it embodies a supreme balance between botrytised complexity and refreshing acidity—a characteristic bond that interlocks potential longevity with immediate approachability.

A Tapestry of Richness and Elegance

This vintage presents a tapestry wherein luscious stone fruits, candied citrus peel and honeysuckle are intricately woven with threads of crème brûlée, almond and spice. The complexity is both profound and seamless, indicative of meticulous vinification married to an extraordinary terroir. The finish—expansive yet precise—dances long after the liquid has departed, leaving an indelible mark on the palate.

In terms of wine investment, not only does the 2001 Chateau Suduiraut from Château Suduiraut stand as an exceptional emblem of its kind, but it also finds itself comfortably ensconced amidst wines deserving contemplation for long-term appreciation. It assures collectors that its zenith lies gracefully ahead, promising reward both sensorily and financially.

The 2001 Chateau Suduiraut offers a symphony conducted by nature and then transcribed to bottle by human touch. For clients on their investment journey with Cult Wines, adding this vintage to their portfolio holds a twofold enchantment—each glimpse at their ledger an evocation of Bordeaux’s liquid gold.

The Suduiraut 2001 has an attractive bouquet of honeycomb, passion fruit and a touch of petrol that are well defined, if not as complex as more recent vintages such as the 2009. The palate is well balanced with fine citrus lemon and apricot notes. This is very harmonious and focused, although it does not quite fan out with the precocity you might expect. This was Christian Seely’s first vintage at the estate, and while it is an excellent wine, I think he has overseen even better vintages since then.
