This is a year that skillfully traversed the rippling climate variations of Rhone, making for a vintage appreciably significant in its set-apart-on-the-shelf status.

Relishing the Rhone in high spirits

The Rhone’s unique terroir possesses an astute ability to imbue wines with splendour, and this continues to be discernible in this vintage. In particular, 2017 was a year that teased winemakers with yo-yoing temperatures, challenging producers to dance with nature's rhythm and craft wines that rise above adversity.

Chateau de Beaucastel has proved yet again that they are adept performers on this dance floor. An outstandingly impressive assemblage of Grenache and Mourvèdre lay testament to their nuanced manufacturing.

Decoding the 2017 elegance

The 2017 Chateauneuf Du Pape combines the proud peppery refrain typical of Rhone Grenache with mesmerizing dark fruit notes punctuated by Mourvèdre. It is a symphony of complex layers, proving that this vintage is one not to be sidelined as an also-ran but rather celebrated as a veritable contender for prime cellaring selection.

This wine exhibits a hard-to-ignore balance, structured yet accessible tannins, and an intriguing blend of ripe black cherries and spicy undertones. Worthy of note too are whispers of cocoa, tobacco leaf and dried herb nuances seemingly hinted at to maintain interest and promote cellaring potential.

Now that it's in the bottle, Beaucastel's 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape comes across as full-bodied and rich, but also a bit shut down and reticent on the nose. With air, black olives and asphalt give way to black cherries and briery spice notes, backed by velvety but substantial tannins and a long, richly textured finish. Given a few years in the cellar, I have no doubt this will drink well for the next 15-plus years.
