Nyetimber launches most expensive English fizz on the market

English sparkling wine producer Nyetimber has launched a prestige cuvee rose. Priced at £175 per bottle, the wine is intended to compete with top-end Champagnes, and is now the most expensive English fizz available on the market.

The range is called 1086, in homage to the first mention of the West Sussex estate in the Doomsday book. It includes the 2010 rose, and a 2009 brut, which is priced at £150 per bottle. Nyetimber has also bottled a number of magnums of both the brut and the rose, priced at £325 and £375 respectively.

The rose comprises 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, while the brut is made from 46% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir and 11% Pinot Meunier. Both are aged on their lees for at least five years.

Chief winemaker Cherie Spriggs said: “A wine like 1086 is only possible because we harvest and ferment each parcel separately. With over 90 separate parcels in our vineyards, we can nurture and develop their nuanced flavours to create the ultimate expression of the estate. 1086 represents the best of the best from those parcels.”

According to Spriggs, the estate already has second vintages of both wines in preparation, with a 2010 brut and 2013 rose due to go on sale in the future.
