Producers optimistic for quality and quantity of Burgundy 2018

Producers and experts are optimistic about Burgundy’s forthcoming 2018 vintage, Decanter reports.

Writing on his harvest blog, Clive Coatest MW said: “There have been few interruptions for rain and thankfully no hail, so the crop is large as well as of high quality.”

Bernard Boisson of Domaine Boisson-Vadot in Meursault believes the 2018 “will be a great vintage; there is both quality and quantity.” He added that “according to older winemakers, this vintage is similar to 1959. For me, I think it is closer to 1982”.

Meanwhile, Aubert de Villaine, co-owner of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, said: “After spring we had a favourable season with rain at the right times, especially during the hottest periods. I think the vintage is getting closer to 2015 and 2003, even if we don’t have the very ripe side of 2003.”

According to forecasts from the French government’s agreste agency, the area described as ‘Burgundy and Beaujolais’ should see a 21% increase in production in 2018 – up to 2.7 million hectolitres – compared to 2017.
