2016 Saint-Pierre

By Chateau Saint-Pierre

2016 Saint-Pierre from Chateau Saint-Pierre, St-Julien, Bordeaux

In my four decades of wine criticism, it's become apparent that each vintage sings its own particular ode to the earth and sky from whence it came. The 2016 Saint-Pierre from Chateau Saint-Pierre is no exception—indeed, it stands as a distinguished composition from an estate reputed for its consistent excellence in the heart of St-Julien.

A Vintage That Defies Expectations

Reflecting upon the climatic ballet of 2016, Bordeaux was bestowed with a growing season that toyed with vintners' nerves before culminating in a harvest that can only be described as a winemaker's Rhapsody in Blue. What seemed an uncertain start gave way to a resplendent finish; the 2016 Saint-Pierre encapsulates this dynamic narrative with poise and complexity.

Beneath the veneer of deep ruby lies a tableau of olfactory splendour, where dark-berried fruit intertwines with hints of cigar box and sage. On the palate, the wine from Chateau Saint-Pierre reveals its layered identity—a Majestic tapestry woven with ripe tannins and a fleeting kiss of oak that escorts you towards an enduring, polished finish.

In Pursuit of the Exceptional

For aficionados and wine investors alike, this offering is a testament to the skill with which the winemakers at Chateau Saint-Pierre harnessed the caprices of weather to sculpt a vintage both delightful in its youth and promising for the cellar. With its poised balance and eloquent expression of terroir, 2016 Saint-Pierre renders not just an investment in fine wine but an investment in liquid artistry.

To immerse oneself in the 2016 vintage from this acclaimed St-Julien estate is to engage with a chapter of winemaking alchemy. Let this venerable expression populate your portfolio and, more importantly, your glass—herein lies a story worth savouring.

Blueberry, blackberry and fresh currant-leaf character. Full-bodied, refined, beautiful, dense and tight. Great depth. Best ever.

Beautifully done, with ample grip but a polished, fresh feel around the core of blueberry, cassis and warm plum flavors. Lovely anise and singed apple wood accents show on the finish.—J.M.
